WASHINGTON - The 2023 season for the Gallaudet University football team came to an official close on Saturday afternoon. GU needed some help to clinch the automatic bid to next week's NCAA tournament as the Bison finished in a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) standings with a 3-1 record. Gallaudet shares the regular-season title with Alfred State College and Anna Maria College.
GU (4-5) needed Anna Maria (5-4) to lose to Vermont State University Castleton (2-7) but the AMCATS rolled to a 58-23 win on Saturday afternoon at home. Earlier in the day, Alfred State (6-4) broke open a 6-3 game at Dean College (2-8) and won going away, 55-3. Due to the various tiebreakers the Pioneers from Alfred State will represent the ECFC in the NCAA tournament as they lay claim to the automatic bid.
The Bison finished their season on an upswing as Gallaudet won four of its last five games.
"I am so proud of this Bison team and coaches for how they overcame injuries and came together during conference play to earn a share of the ECFC regular-season title," said Gallaudet head coach
Chuck Goldstein. "Congratulations to Anna Maria and Alfred State on their respective seasons and for being co-champions with us. Good luck to the Pioneers in the NCAAs."
Gallaudet's 2023 football season will also go down in history as the
Bison and AT&T launched and used the first heads up helmet device in an official game back on Oct. 7. The AT&T 5G Helmet propelled the Bison in the national spotlight as the Bison were featured nationally and globally as major news networks flocked to Kendall Green to produce stories on the new technology. The Gallaudet team also starred in the
AT&T "Sound of Silence" commercial that aired for the first time on Oct. 14 and has continued to be aired throughout the college football season on all major networks.
