Box Score 2 MORRISVILLE, N.Y.- On a cold Saturday, the Gallaudet University softball team ended their 2022 season as they split a conference doubleheader with SUNY Morrisville. The Mustangs (6-30, 6-22 United East) won the first game, 9-3, and the Bison (6-32, 6-21 United East) took the second game 13-9.
Game 1: SUNY Morrisville 9, Gallaudet 3
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead as the host scored six times in the bottom of the first inning. The two teams scored two times each in the second as the Mustanfs held an 8-2 lead. Each team scored one more run to conclude the scoring.
In the second inning, GU got on the scoreboard when freshman Isabella Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) slapped a double to left-center field to bring home fellow freshman Emily Nover (District Heights, Md.), who doubled moments earlier. Paulone would score when sophomore Kate Lorenzo (Omaha, Neb.) reached base by a Mustang error.
GU tallied one more run in the third inning when junior Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas.) drilled a double to right-center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch by the Mustangs pitcher. Freshman Kaci Ketchum (Austin, Texas) grounded out to shortstop while Giuntoli scored on the throw.
SUNY Morrisville held Gallaudet scoreless for the rest of the game.
Freshman pitcher Anya Pothorski (2-8) took the loss in the circle as she pitched a complete game of six innings and struck out seven.
Game 2: SUNY Morrisville 13, Gallaudet 9
In the second game Gallaudet took the lead in the first inning and held it over SUNY Morrisville for the remainder of the game. The Bison scored two or more runs in every inning but the second and seventh.
Freshman Danyeal Davis (Newport News, Va.) led the Bison in game two as she went 2-for-4 with a double, a single, one run and three RBI. Freshman Caitlyn Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single, two runs and two RBI. Lorenzo finished the game, 3-for-5, with a double, two singles, two runs and two RBI.
Junior Emma Giuntoli (2-8) took the win in the circle as she pitched a complete seven innings and allowed nine runs (eight earned) and struck out one.
