NEAC's top men's basketball team blocks out Gallaudet

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team faced a stern test here Wednesday night against Penn St. Harrisburg, the top team in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), in the Field House. The Bison fought hard but couldn't slow down the hot-shooting Lions, who won 83-67. 

Gallaudet (2-15, 2-6 NEAC) outscored Penn St. Harrisburg (11-6, 7-1 NEAC) in the second half, 38-33, but dug a 21-point deficit in the first half as the Lions led 50-29. Penn St. Harrisburg led by as much as 31 points midway through the second half before Gallaudet chipped away at the deficit. 

Senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) led all-scorers with 29 points as he made 10 of 21 shots from the field, including six 3-pointers. Valencia was one of three Bison in double figures. Sophomore forward Matt Sherman (Angora, Minn.) tallied 12 points and six rebounds while senior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) added 11 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. 

Penn St. Harrisburg sophomore guard Donyae Baylor-Carroll had an impressive first half as he made 7 of 10 shots from 3-point range to net 21 of his team-high 25 points in the game. He almost had a triple-double as he passed out 10 assists and grabbed seven boards. Forward Dylan Daniels nearly had a triple-double as he finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and an eye-popping nine blocks. Daniels tallied nine of the team's 12 blocks. Guards Nate Curry and Zegary Scott III chipped in 17 and 10 points, respectively.

  • Junior Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) tallied eight points, eight rebounds and six assists
  • The two teams combined for 92 rebounds (49-43 edge to PSH)
  • GU scored 24 points in the paint
  • PSH recorded 24 points in transition on the fast break
  • The Bison scored 18 points off 17 turnovers made by the Lions
  • This season is PSH's first back in the NEAC after being in the Capital Athletic Conference for the past several seasons
  • PSH's last full season in the NEAC was 2012-13
  • Gallaudet has lost four straight
  • GU went 1-7 during the month of January
  • Gallaudet's athletic department paid tribute, before the game, to Kobe and Gianna Bryant along with the other seven victims of last Sunday's helicopter crash in California. Several Bison players wore Kobe Bryant jerseys during pre-game warm ups

UP NEXT
Gallaudet will travel to Penn St.-Abington (7-10, 2-6 NEAC) this Saturday, Feb. 1, for a 1 p.m. conference game. The Bison defeated the Nittany Lions, 67-65, two weeks ago (Jan. 15) at home.
