Bison seniors shine the brightest on Senior Day as Gallaudet closes season with a win

WASHINGTON – There was an electric energy and positive momentum on display here Saturday as Gallaudet University men's basketball played its final game of the 2025-26 season. The Bison started their five seniors, and the veteran players brought a special zest to Padden Court for the buff and blue against Penn College in a United East game.

The GU Senior Five left it all on the court as the Bison took down the Wildcats 73-70 before a crowd of 125 in the Field House.

Gallaudet (3-18, 2-11 United East) held the lead the entire first half and through the opening six minutes of the second half. The Bison led by as much as eight points in the first half and took a 30-28 lead into halftime.

The GU Senior Five combined to score 22 of the 30 points netted by the Bison in the first half. They also all played at least 17 minutes in the opening half. They went on to score 25 of GU's 43 points in the second half and left the court for a final time with a win.

Sophomore small forward Brandon Washington (Citronelle, Ala.), one of the five graduating seniors on the team, led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in 30 minutes played. Junior Jeremiah Davis (Milwaukee, Wis.), another one of the five graduating seniors on the team, was the second leading scorer on the team. Davis set career marks for points (nine), rebounds (six) and added one block and one steal in 30 minutes played.

Four-year players Samar Sawan (Toronto, Ontario), Kyle Florio (Franklin, Mass.) and Bruce Brewer Jr. (Santa Fe, N.M.) finished with eight, six and five points, respectively. Florio added a career-high five steals and five assists and brought down three rebounds. Brewer Jr. nabbed five rebounds, made three steals and passed out a game-high six assists.

Penn College (4-20, 3-10 United East) gained the lead three different times in the second half but couldn't hold onto it as GU answered every time. The Wildcats' final lead vanished at the five-minute mark when Florio drained a 3-pointer off an assist from Brewer Jr. to give Gallaudet a 61-59 lead.

The GU Senior Five scored the final 16 points for the Bison in the closing minutes to secure the third win of the season.

GU received a boost off the bench from sophomore guard Jory Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) and first-year Jayden Orsi-Pedersen (Frederick, Md.) who scored seven and six points, respectively.

The Wildcats were paced by senior guard Owen Newcomer who scored 19 points on five 3-pointers and four rebounds. Junior forward Landon Reeder chipped in 12 points, five boards and two assists.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to the start of the game the GU men's basketball program paid tribute to its graduating seniors as family and friends gathered to celebrate them. This was the final game for the following five players: Bruce Brewer Jr., Jeremiah Davis, Kyle Florio, Samer Sawan and Brandon Washington. "I am really proud of our seniors today. They competed the right way, played with toughness, and represented Bison Pride with class. This win wasn't about the scoreboard but it was about setting the standard for our program. They showed what it means to respect the game, trust each other and fight for 40 minutes," said Gallaudet first-year Head Coach Sekoe White. "Now the focus shifts to the off season. Our returning players understand what we need to reload, and not rebuild. The work will start immediately in the weight room, skill development, and in leadership growth. Thanks to our seniors who instilled the mindset and lessons learned through this season that help us to take accountability to reload. We will always remember the sacrifices that Brandon, Kyle, Bruce, Samer, and JJ have made for Gallaudet Men's Basketball Program."
