Bison swept by Nittany Lions to begin conference play

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team lost 11-8 to Penn St.-Abington on a blustery and cold Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) nine-inning game. The Bison (7-15, 0-3 NEAC) trailed for the entire game, pulled to within one run, but could never get ahead of the Nittany Lions (10-9, 3-0 NEAC) on the opening weekend of conference play.

Gallaudet (7-15, 0-3 NEAC) cut the Penn St.-Abington lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Bison scored three times. The trio of Gilwon Seo (Hongseong, South Korea), Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) and Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) came through with RBI singles. GU had a chance to add more runs as it left the bases loaded before a ground out ended the rally.

Penn St.-Abington (10-9, 3-0 NEAC) added two insurance runs, one in the sixth and eighth innings, to pad its lead.

Freshman starting pitcher Josh Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) took the loss as he allowed nine runs on six hits, walked eight and struck out one. Freshman Billy Sowers (Woodland Hills, Calif.) pitched the remainder of the game as he threw five solid innings of relief.

Zachary Brightbill (2-1) picked up the win after he threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and Jaden Himmelreich picked up his first save of the season as he closed out the final two innings where he only gave up one hit.

Upton led the Bison offense going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. Seo finished 2-for-3, two runs and two RBI.
