GU drops NEAC opener to Penn St.-Abington

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University was swept here Saturday afternoon by Penn St.-Abington in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener at Hoy Field. The Bison (7-14, 0-2 NEAC) were shut out in the first game, 7-0, and lost the second game by six runs, 11-5, in nine innings to the Nittany Lions (9-9, 2-0 NEAC).

Game 1: Penn St.-Abington 7, Gallaudet 0
Nittany Lion pitcher Ryan McCarty (2-1), a D3baseball.com preseason All-American, pitched a complete game shutout as he surrendered five hits and struck out six batters in a quick seven-inning game that clocked in at one hour and 50 minutes.

Gallaudet starting pitcher Robersy Delgado (Tampa, Fla.) threw six strong innings but he allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and one walk.

Penn St.-Abington broke open a 3-0 game with four runs in the sixth inning.

Five different Bison had hits in the game as GU left four runners on base in the loss.

Game 2: Penn St.-Abington 11, Gallaudet 5
In the second game of the doubleheader, things got pretty close for the Bison as they pulled to within one run, 6-5, in the bottom of the sixth inning as GU scored three times off Nittany Lion starting pitcher Darrien Mogel (3-0).

Gallaudet scored two runs with two outs in the sixth as juniors Matt Scuderi (Jensen Beach, Fla.) and Gilwon Seo (Hongseong, South Korea) singled home runs. The duo then tried to pull off a double steal but Scuderi was thrown out at home to end the rally.

The Bison loaded the bases in the ninth inning with one out but GU's final two batters flied out to end the game.

Freshman pitcher Shea Sliva-Wynne (Richmond, Texas) took his third loss of the season as he allowed six runs on seven hits, walked eight and struck out two.
