Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON - A long afternoon turned into evening for the Gallaudet University softball team here Monday against McDaniel College. The Bison (3-5) dropped the non-conference doubleheader to the Green Terror (2-2) as the visitors won 35-6 in five innings in the first game before squeezing in a 3-1 win in five innings as the second game was called due to darkness.

Game 1: McDaniel 35, Gallaudet 6
Gallaudet, playing its fifth and sixth games in three days, ran out of pitching in the first game as the Bison issued 26 walks as a trio of pitchers threw 239 pitches. The first three innings of the game took two hours as McDaniel led 26-6 after three. The Green Terror batted around three times and scored 17 runs in the second inning alone.

Gallaudet got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when sophomore Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) doubled down the left-field line to plate freshman Kasmine Burford (Greenwood, Ind.), who reached base after a hit by pitch. Sophomore Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) raced home, moments later, on a wild pitch as GU trailed by 20 runs.

The Bison scored four times in the bottom of the third after two infield hits drove in runs and Neild's two-run single to left field plated Gallaudet's fifth and sixth runs in the game.

Gallaudet freshman pitcher Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) took the loss after only throwing one inning as the Green Terror scored eight times on five hits, five walks and one strikeout. Freshman Elizabeth Stern (Lexington, Mass.) followed and issued 15 walks and 18 runs (15 earned) on six hits and one strikeout. Neild closed out the game in the circle and gave up nine runs (seven earned) on three hits and six walks.

McDaniel's Mattie Whalen (2-for-4, three runs, seven RBI) hit a grand slam over the left field fence in the 17-run second inning. Pitcher Krista Waller (1-0) picked up the win as she allowed four runs on five hits, walked one and struck out four.

Game 2: McDaniel 3, Gallaudet 1
The second game was rushed along after it started 10 minutes after six o'clock as the sun set in the west in the nation's capital.

GU struck first when senior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) grounded out as Henshaw raced home from third base after she led-off the frame with a single to left field.

McDaniel responded with a run in the second and two in the third.

The last two innings were played at a feverish pace as the Green Terror bunted to get out to make sure the game was made official before its was called due to darkness.

Freshman Kendall Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) made her debut in the circle and was able to throw strikes and get outs in five innings of work. She allowed three runs on four hits, walked three and struck out three.

McDaniel reliever Cassie Rickrode (1-1) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief.
