Gallaudet outruns Wolfpack in second half en route to 79-62 win

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Gallaudet university men's basketball team won on the road, 79-62, here Saturday over Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game.

The Wolfpack (6-11, 3-8 NEAC) took control of the game early, leading the majority of the first half, and held a 13-point edge midway through the opening 20 minutes of play. Junior Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) helped the Bison (12-6, 9-3 NEAC) dig into the Wolfpack's lead right before intermission. Nelson scored seven of GU's 10 points as his layup at the three-minute mark knotted the game at 33. Nelson sank a 3-pointer, a minute later, as GU had its first lead of the game up 36-33. Sophomore Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) converted a 3-point play with 38 seconds left and Nelson made a layup in the waning seconds as Gallaudet took a 41-38 lead into halftime. 

Nelson tallied 13 of his 20 points in the first half as he made 6 of 7 shots from the field. Senior guard Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) matched Nelson with 13 points as he went 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Gordon finished the game with a game-high 25 points. Cruz grabbed a career best 12 rebounds to go with six points, five assists and two steals. Junior center Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes of play.

The teams exchanged the lead to begin the second half before Nelson converted a 3-point play at the 17:39 mark to give GU the lead for good, up 44-43. That play began a 15-0 run over the next four minutes as the Bison advantage increased to 56-43.

Coach Kevin Kovacs emptied the bench down the stretch as GU reserves gained valuable playing time on the road. Freshman guard Jake Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) made his second collegiate 3-pointer at the 2:40 mark as Gallaudet led by 21, 77-56.

Keuka was led by senior guard Casey Williams' 19-point performance as he made five 3-pointers to go with seven rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal.
