Box Score CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – School history was
made Monday night here as the Gallaudet University men's basketball
team won its ninth straight game with a 75-70 win over Wilson
College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game. The
ninth consecutive win in a season surpasses the 98-year-old school
record of eight set in 1916-17. GU first fielded a men's basketball
team in 1903-04.
In a tightly contested game the Bison (16-5, 12-3 NEAC) trailed
for the majority of the first half as Wilson (3-16, 2-13 NEAC) led
34-32 at the half. There were seven lead changes, five in the
second half, and 12 times the game was tied. The 12th and final tie
happened at the 1:47 mark in the second half when Wilson's Rasul
Jackson made a three-pointer to knot the game at 70. The Bison
closed out the game at the free throw line as they made 5 of 6
attempts to lock up the 16th win of the season.
Three different Bison reached double figures led by sophomore
guard Raymond
Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) that scored 19 points as he
made 7 of 11 shots from the field. Junior forward Trey Gordon
(Talladega, Ala.) poured in 16 points including three
three-pointers to go with 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sophomore forward Joshua
McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) netted 16 points, six
rebounds, one block and one steal in 24 minutes off the bench.
Freshman forward Andy Cruz
(Bronx, N.Y.) added eight points and five rebounds while senior
Ben
Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) scored seven points and four
rebounds.
Marqwon Wynn led the Phoenix with 13 bench points followed by
Ben Holl's 12 points and seven rebounds. Rahim Bunch passed out a
game-high 10 assists to go with nine points, four rebounds and two
steals.
The Bison outrebounded the Phoenix, 42-28, and held a 36-24 edge
in the post. Wilson scored 23 points off Gallaudet's 12 turnovers
while the Bison scored 12 points off second chance opportunities.
Gallaudet shot 48.1 percent from the field (25 of 52) while Wilson
shot 41.5 percent (27 of 65) and made 12 three-pointers.
GU will stay in Pennsylvania overnight and will travel to Bryn
Athyn College (5-18, 5-11 NEAC) tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 17) for
another conference contest at 8 p.m.
