WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University softball team dropped both home games on a cold and overcast Sunday afternoon against McDaniel College, 10-0 and 17-2 in five innings. It was a tough day for the Bison offense as they only recorded six combined hits in the doubleheader. 

McDaniel (2-0) scored runs in seven of 10 innings it played against Gallaudet (2-4) at the GU Softball Complex. In the first game the Green Terror had a key five-run inning to break open the game. They added four more runs in the second and one in the fourth before the game ended in the fifth due to the mercy rule.

Junior starting pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the loss in the first game as she gave up nine runs (eight earned) on five hits and walked four runners in an inning and a third. Senior pitcher Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) came in during the second inning and gave up one run on four hits and struck out two.

In the second game, McDaniel again scored five in the first inning, but gave up one run to Gallaudet as sophomore designated player Anna Lynch (Falls Church, Va.) scored off of Sweigart's RBI ground out. McDaniel extended its lead by eight, 9-1, as it scored four runs in the second inning. In the final two innings of play the Green Terror scored eight runs, while the Bison were able to bring in one runner in the bottom of the fifth. Sweigart (1-2) pitched a complete game in the 15-run loss.

Gallaudet continues its 10-game homestand to start the 2014 season as the Bison host Valley Forge Christian College on Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
