Box Score 2 WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University softball team was swept in a doubleheader on opening day against Wesley College at the GU Softball Complex on a beautiful, spring-like Sunday afternoon. The Wolverines won the first game 11-2 and 15-0 in five innings in the second game. It was a tough day for the Bison offense as they only recorded four hits and scored two runs in the doubleheader.
Gallaudet (0-2) only had one hit in the second game as freshman Kimberly Klock (Puyallup, Wash.) singled up the middle in the third inning. Wesley's (2-0) starting pitcher Lilly Engel threw a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit in five innings with four strikeouts.
In the first game, Gallaudet started off strong, scoring the first run of the game in the first inning on senior Caitlin Stevens' (Glenn Allen, Va.) sacrifice fly to right field. The Wolverines went on to score eight straight runs in the next three innings before the Bison were able to add their second run, 8-2. Wesley scored the game's final three runs in the seventh.
Senior Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) had one of the two runs in the first game and one hit, with Klock scoring the second run. Stevens and junior Mia Fernandez (Artesia, N.M.) both tallied a RBI in the loss.
Gallaudet will continue play at home on Saturday, March 1, as they face Baptist Bible (Pa.) in a doubleheader that will start at noon.
