Box Score CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Gallaudet University women's basketball team broke its three-game losing streak in a convincing 76-57 win Tuesday night as it took complete control against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Wilson College in the Frank E. Gannett Memorial Field House.
Gallaudet (7-7, 4-1 NEAC) came out fast, scoring 12 points in the first three and a half minutes of the game while holding the Wilson Phoenix (0-6, 0-3 NEAC) scoreless. Once the Bison had the lead they never looked back, dominated the Phoenix in every facet of the game. Defensively, the Bison forced 16 turnovers, snatched 16 defensive rebounds and tallied 10 steals. By the end of the first half the Bison led by 23-points, 45-22. Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) and junior guard Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) lead the first half offensive surge for the Bison, both netting 10 points each.
The Bison momentum continued entering the second half, as they extended their lead to 31-points in the first four minutes, 56-25. The Phoenix, however, refused to admit defeat and began to fire back and slowly chip away at the Bison's lead.
Gallaudet was unable to contain Wilson's Vanessa Whitfield (33 points) in the second half, who scored 20-points, in the comeback attempt. With Wilson's offensive push, it was able to outscore the Bison in the second half 35-31. Despite their effort, the Phoenix were unable to generate enough offense to topple the Bison.
The Bison saw a full team effort in the win, with four starters scoring in the double digits. The team shot 66.7 percent from the 3-point range and outrebounded Wilson, 42-29. Senior guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) led the way with 18 points as she made 8 of 9 shots from the field. Warren was second in scoring with 16 points and had a game-high four steals. Junior forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and Stergio each contributed 14 points. Stergio (seven rebounds) passed out a game-high six assists while Ciccarelli ripped down eight boards. Junior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) came off the bench and scored nine points and grabbed a game best 10 rebounds and made five steals in the win.
The Phoenix were led by Whitfield's 33-point performance and team best eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Morgan Wonders was second on the team in scoring with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Bison will continue their conference play on Saturday, Jan. 18, as they welcome NEAC foe Cazenovia College to the Field House at 3 p.m.
