Box Score WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team lost to the University of Mary Washington in straight sets, 3-0, in their home opener Thursday night, in front of an excited crowd in the Field House.
Gallaudet (6-3) got off to a slow start as the Eagles (4-3) took the first set 23-25. The Bison started to make a comeback in the second set but struggled to pull ahead and lost, 19-25. In the third set, the Bison found their rhythm with a series of well executed plays but were unable to maintain a lead and lost the final set of the match 21-25.
Junior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) led the Bison with 12 kills and five digs while senior opposite hitter Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) contributed eight and five digs. Sophomore libero Kate Fetzer (Noblesville, Ind.) had a team-high 19 digs in the loss. Setters TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.) and Tarja Lewis (Frederick, Md.) combined for 25 assists.
Kaitlynn Wickersham and Christine Tran led the Eagles in digs combining for 36 while setter Courtney Guengerich tallied 14 assists. Emma Olson led the Eagles with eight kills and seven digs in the victory.
GU hits the road to enter North Eastern Athletic Conference play this weekend as the Bison travel to Keuka College to face Cazenovia College and SUNY Cobleskill at 4 and 6 p.m., respectively.
