GU bullpen can't contain McDaniel as Green Terror plate five runs in the seventh

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team lost 10-3 to McDaniel College in a non-conference nine-inning game on a sunny, windy Thursday afternoon at Hoy Field.

Heading into the seventh inning Gallaudet (3-6) trailed the Green Terror (3-2) by two, 5-3. The Bison then gave up five runs off of two singles, two errors, a double, a walk and a sacrifice fly in the top half of the inning as McDaniel held a seven-run advantage, 10-3. Neither team was able to put another run on the scoreboard the rest of the game.

The Bison combined for three double plays in the loss to McDaniel as the Green Terror left 13 runners on base. Sophomore second baseman Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) was part of all three double plays, which occurred in the first, second and eighth innings. Senior first baseman Jeremy Adams (Glenn Dale, Md.) had a hand in the double plays in the second and eighth innings, along with senior shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.). Junior third baseman Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) got things started in the first inning when he caught a line drive and threw out a runner, who was off of second base.

Freshman pitcher Ryan Rippy (Tullahoma, Tenn.) went 4.2 innings for the Bison, as he surrendered four runs (one earned) on five hits, walked seven and notched one strikeout. Gallaudet used five different pitchers out of the bullpen the rest of the game as they combined to allow six runs (three earned) on six hits, walked six and struck out one batter.

Four different Bison had two hits led by Adams, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored in the loss.

McDaniel pitcher James Chiorello (1-1) picked up the win as he pitched into the seventh before being lifted for Andrew Monger, who picked up the three-inning save as he struck out three batters and only allowed two hits in his scoreless relief appearance. Chiorello's line saw him log six innings where he allowed three runs on 10 hits, walked one and struck out two. Center fielder Sean Sivo went 3-for-5 for the Green Terror with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Right fielder Pat Christopher went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.

Gallaudet will next host Emerson College at Hoy Field on Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m.
