Bison outlast Washington College in 14 innings, 2-1

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team won 2-1 in walk-off fashion against Washington College in a 14-inning affair on a cold overcast Tuesday afternoon game at Hoy Field.

Gallaudet (8-13) started off the bottom of the 14th inning with a single by sophomore Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) up the middle. The next two batters reached on throwing errors. Junior Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) reached first on a throwing error by third baseman Joe Willis which advanced Bensman to second. Freshman Ryan Rippy (Tullahoma, Tenn.) then reached first on a throwing error by pitcher Sean Baldwin which advanced Smith to second base and allowed Bensman to score all the way from second base to end the game that lasted three hours, 25 minutes.

In the bottom of the third inning, Rippy was caught stealing and was out at second; however, Jeremy Murphy (Glenn Dale, Md.) was able to score the Bison's first run of the game on the throw. Washington (8-8) scored its loan run on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning. Bryan Baquer reached first base safely, Willis was out at second base but Michael Festa was safe at the plate.

Starting pitcher Chris Guinn threw six innings for the Bison, giving up one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Smith (1-3) got the win for GU after coming in for the last inning of relief, without giving up a run, on no hits and one walk. Sophomore Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) pitched six innings of scoreless relief to keep the Bison in the game. Junior center fielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two walks. Rippy and Bensman also had two hits in the win. The Bison left 13 runners on base in their longest game of the season.

Dan Jarrell threw nine innings for WC giving up one run on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Baldwin (0-2) earned the loss, giving up one run on one hit and three walks in one inning of work. Baquer went 3-for-6 for the Shoremen with a triple.

Gallaudet will face No. 8 Christopher Newport University on Sunday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at Hoy Field.
