Box Score WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team snapped at 15-game losing streak Sunday with a 66-52 victory over College of Saint Elizabeth in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game at the Field House. The win marks the first for the Bison in 2013 and the 66 points is the second highest scoring output this season.
Gallaudet (3-15, 1-10 NEAC South) trailed for most of the first half but took over the lead with two minutes left to play before halftime. Sophomore guard Alexa Justus (Forks, Wash.) made a 3-pointer, assisted by senior Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.), to give GU the lead for good up 24-23 with 2:08 on the clock. Junior Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) added a 3-pointer and Justus followed with another basket as Gallaudet took a 29-23 lead into intermission.
The Bison led the Eagles the entire second half, though Saint Elizabeth tried to cut the Bison deficit. The Screaming Eagles (7-10, 5-6 NEAC South) pulled to within two, 42-40, when Chantele Clark (six points, 11 rebounds) made a jump shot at the 10:48 mark. The Bison responded with a 9-0 run to a 51-40 lead with just over seven minutes left in regulation.
Stergio notched her sixth double-double as Bison as she tied her career-high mark of 25 points and brought down 10 rebounds, made five steals to go with two assists and one block. Justus recorded her first double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds (career-high) and passed out six assists. Weiss had 11 points as she made 3-of-6 shots from 3-point range. Freshman Augusta Schriver (Middletown, Md.) was the fourth Bison in double digits with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Cheyenne Grant led the Eagles on offence with 15 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal while Amerisse Rogers added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.
GU made a season best six 3-pointers and converted on 14-of-23 attempts from the free throw line. The Bison held a 44-42 edge on rebounds and scored 26 points off 25 turnovers committed by the Screaming Eagles.
Gallaudet will hit the road and face conference foe Wilson College (2-11, 0-10 NEAC South) on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m.
