READING, Pa. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team saw its 2011-12 season come to a close on Sunday with a 70-46 loss on the road against Penn St.-Berks in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest. GU had its three-game win streak snapped as the Bison were plagued by 35 turnovers and poor shooting.

Gallaudet (8-16, 6-12 NEAC South) committed its second highest turnover total this season which led to 29 points for the Nittany Lions. GU shot 36.2 percent from the field and only made 1 of 14 attempts (7.1 percent) from three-point range. Penn St.-Berks (9-15, 8-10 NEAC South) never gave the Bison a chance to find their shooting touch and pulled away throughout the entire game.

Freshman forward Arlene Ngalle (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench to lead Gallaudet with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds but shot 1-for-15 from the field, 0-for-11 from three-point range. Weiss made 8 of 9 attempts from the free throw line in the loss.

Shakiyla Stone, Keisha Robinson and Fatima Rone each tallied 15 points to pace Penn St.-Berks. Robinson also had a game-high four assists, with Jaslyn Silva and Sherrie Satchel pulling down four rebounds each. 

The two teams met previously this season on Dec. 11 2011, when sophomore Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) scored 22 points to lead Gallaudet to a convincing 85-55 victory. However, the Bison were without their leading (Latham) and fourth-leading scorer, Claire Tucker (Middletown, Md.), on Sunday. The pair combined for 39 points against the Nittany Lions in the first meeting. The 85 points scored and 30-point margin of victory were tops for the Bison this season.

Gallaudet turned the ball over in its first four possessions to start the game but was able to knot up the score at 9-9 with 12:21 remaining in the first. However, the Bison failed to connect on another field goal until Amy Bachtel (Columbus, Ohio) scored a layup on a pass from Bianca Richards-Hamilton (Mesa, Ariz.) at the 5:31 mark. Berks outscored Gallaudet 18-9 in the final 12 minutes of the first half and took a 27-18 lead into halftime.

The second half was unfortunately no different for the Bison. Gallaudet was already down by eight points, 31-23, with 17:13 left in regulation when the Bison went on another cold streak. The Bison missed several opportunities to capitalize on Berks' own turnovers (24 total), and instead were outscored 20-5 over a six-minute span and fell behind 50-28 midway through the second half.  The difference proved to be greater than Gallaudet could overcome.

This was the first season for Gallaudet coach Brendan Stern at the helm. There were no seniors on this year's team as GU should return its entire starting line-up next year.
