Ann Whited Named to CoSIDA Women's Volleyball Academic All-District First Team

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced their 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Teams for women's volleyball and Gallaudet University senior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) was named to the District 2 first team for Division III. Whited will now be added to the national ballot for the chance to earn Academic All-American honors, which will be announced on Tuesday, December 4.

This is the sixth honor this season for Whited who has helped carry the Bison to a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship and an NCAA tournament berth. She was named NEAC Player of the Year, earned a spot on the All-NEAC women's volleyball first team, and garnered two NEAC Women's Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week awards after an all-around year in which she was ranked in the top 10 in the conference for multiple statistical categories. Whited ranked fifth in total kills with 364, and her 2.78 kills per set average was good for ninth in the conference. Moreover, she was fifth in the NEAC with a .241 hitting percentage and was ranked number 10 with 390 digs. Whited was ranked 12th with 0.47 services aces per set. She was also named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week on Oct. 20 following a four-win stretch in which Whited accumulated 32 kills for a .304 hitting percentage (32-8-79), 32 digs, 10 service aces and two solo blocks for a total of 44 points.

Whited's success has carried over to the classroom as well. She currently maintains a 3.76 GPA pursuit of a bachelor's degree in deaf studies.

The last Gallaudet University women's volleyball player to be so honored was Shana Lehmann who earned a first team Academic All-District spot in 2009. Gallaudet last had an Academic All-American in 1993 and has only earned two selections in program history since the inception of the awards in 1952. Wayne Langbein was named to the men's second team for track and field in 1993 and Brian Bippus was selected to the men's basketball second team in 1991. GU has had all-district honorees over the years, four during the 2009-10 season, and Whited joins football defensive lineman Adham Talaat as Gallaudet's two honorees thus far for the 2012-13 calendar year.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. District Two is comprised of Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.

CoSIDA began this program in the 1950's, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports and across all divisions with these elite Capital One Academic All-America scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CoSIDA honors Academic All-Americans in 12 sports.

The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes listed per sport and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 DII and DIII Academic All-America teams program.
