Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team continues to search for its first win during the month of January as the Bison dropped a 61-32 decision Wednesday to visiting Penn St.-Harrisburg, the first-place team in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division, before a crowd of 289 at the Field House.
Penn St.-Harrisburg (8-6, 6-1 NEAC South) went on a quick 16-0 run and led 19-2 midway through the first half. The Lady Lions were aggressive on defense as they pressed and trapped the Bison ball handlers as GU turned the ball over 16 times in the first half. Gallaudet (3-11, 1-7 NEAC South) finished the game with 29 turnovers that led to 28 points scored by the Lady Lions. Harrisburg led 34-13 at intermission.
GU improved in the second half as the Bison scored 19 points and received 11 of those points from their bench. Freshman forward Arlene Ngalle (Washington, D.C.) scored six of her career-high eight points in the final 20 minutes of play and had a game-high eight rebounds. Fellow freshman forward Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) led all GU scorers with 13 points as she made 6 of 7 shots down low for the buff and blue. Freshman guard Claire Tucker (Middletown, Md.) scored five points and matched Ngalle with eight rebounds off the bench. Sophomore guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.), the leading scorer on Gallaudet's team, made a jumper in the first minute of play when the Bison trailed 3-2 but didn't score again for the rest of the game. This was the first game this season the Bison didn't make a three-point shot as they finished 0-for-6.
Penn St.-Harrisburg received balance scoring as it rotated through seven different players in the game as each player logged 20 or more minutes. Junior forward Daril Foose led all-scorers with 14 points and three blocks while Monet Cunningham scored 11 points and Brittani Guerre and Amanda Moyer scored 10 each.
GU wraps up its four-game homestand on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. against NEAC foe SUNY Cobleskill.
