GU softball closes out home schedule with doubleheader against McDaniel

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University softball team closed out its regular-season schedule with a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday against McDaniel College at home and lost 8-0 and 14-0 in five innings. It was a tough day for the Bison offense as they only recorded one hit in each game.

McDaniel (14-22) scored runs in eight of the 10 innings they played against Gallaudet (10-24) on Tuesday. In the first game the Green Terror had a key five-run inning to break open the game. They added two more runs in the fifth to force Gallaudet to score a run in the bottom half of the inning to keep the game alive or lose by the mercy rule. Junior first baseman Jessica Buckwalter (Palmyra, Mo.) had the lone hit in the first game for GU.

In the second game, McDaniel scored runs in every inning en route to the 14-run victory. Gallaudet third baseman Casey McCullough (Oceanside, Calif.) had the one hit for the Buff and Blue in the loss. GU committed six errors in the second game. Sophomore Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) started the game and earned the loss as she pitched nearly four innings. Freshman Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) came in on relief but was let down by her defense who committed four errors in the fifth inning alone. Sweigart was the losing pitcher in the first game as she went the distance.

The games were the last home games for senior Alicia Balzer (Montgomery Village, Md.). She went a combined 0-for-3 on Tuesday in her final games in the Buff and Blue.

Gallaudet will now focus on this Friday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division tournament that will be hosted by Wilson College. The fourth-seeded Bison will go up against the top-seed Phoenix from Wilson (18-8) on Friday, April 29. As of Tuesday there was still no game times announced by the conference office.
