WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet
University men's swimming team was on the verge of pulling
off one of the biggest upsets in program history as the Bison led
112-111 with two events left on Sunday at the Field House pool
against Marymount (Va.) University. The Saints won the next two
events and gobbled up other team points with second and
fourth-place finishes claiming the 139-122 non-conference win.
Gallaudet (4-5) won the meet's first three events en route
to winning five of the 14 events. It was 'Senior Day'
on Sunday and senior Kyle Sexton (Peoria, Ill.)
stepped up and helped to set the tone in the first event. Sexton
was a member of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team that
finished with a time of 1:50.03. Freshmen DJ
Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.), Richard
Zabelski (Saginaw, Mich.) and John
Hathaway (Lenox, Mass.) rounded out that team with
Sexton.
Even though it was 'Senior Day' it was a junior that
stole the show for the Bison. Junior Brian Bennett
(Colorado Springs, Colo.), the reigning North Eastern Athletic
Conference (NEAC) Men's Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week,
won three events to lead the Bison. Bennett was the first to the
wall in the 1,000 freestyle (10:52.91), 200 freestyle (1:50.69) and
500 freestyle (5:03.82). Fellow junior James
McGowan (Palm Coast, Fla.) won the 50 freestyle with a mad
dash time of 23.46 seconds as Gallaudet President Alan
Hurwitz and company looked on.
Coach Bill Snape commented that this was
probably the best dual meet in his seven-year tenure at Gallaudet.
Marymount closed out the meet with wins in the 200 IM and 200
freestyle relay.
The Bison swim program recognized seniors Sexton, Ben
Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Brandon
Winebarger (Crawford, Tenn.) for their efforts and
dedication on Sunday.
GU will now have three weeks to prepare for the NEAC
championships on February 18-20 hosted by SUNY Cobleskill.
