GU service game serves up 19 aces in win over McDaniel

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University volleyball team picked up its seventh consecutive win on Thursday night at the Field House as the Bison defeated McDaniel College, 3-1, before a crowd of 250. The seven wins is the longest winning streak for the Bison this season.

GU dropped its first set since September 18th, a streak of 18 straight set wins, as the Green Terror (1-13) won the opening set 25-23 over the Bison (12-8). Gallaudet rallied and regained focus and won the next three sets 25-11, 25-13, 25-15.

The Bison have been on a roll with their service game as of late. Gallaudet had 19 service aces against McDaniel and over the course of the last seven matches the Bison have tallied 102 service aces. For the season they have 186.

Sophomore Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) led the Bison with nine service aces to go with 10 kills and eight digs. Sophomore Krystal Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) had five service aces and five kills.

Sophomore Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) recorded a game and season-high kill total with 17 as she went 17-for-25 (.640 hitting percentage) and added two blocks. Sophomore Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) added 12 kills and five digs.

Junior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas), the reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, finished the match with 44 assists and five digs. Junior libero Micaela Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) added 11 digs in the win. The entire team played at least one set in the win.

McDaniel was paced by Annie McShea who had 12 kills and 14 digs. Jackie Hawkins passed out 18 assists to go with eight digs.

Gallaudet is off this weekend but will return to action next week when the Bison travel to Fredericksburg, Va., to face former Capital Athletic Conference foe University of Mary Washington on Thursday, October 7, at 7 p.m.
