Box Score 2 YORK, Pa. – It was a long and cold day
for the Gallaudet University softball team on the road at Capital
Athletic Conference foe York (Pa.) College as the two teams played
a doubleheader. The host Spartans swept the twinbill with two wins
13-2 and 22-1 as both games went five innings.
The Bison (1-19, 0-10 CAC) scored two runs in the top of the
first inning against York (28-6, 9-3 CAC) after the first two
Gallaudet batters were retired. Freshman Alicia
Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) delivered the big blow with a
two-run single to score junior Casey McCullough
(Oceanside, Calif.) and freshman Kara Gulvas
(Crown Point, Ind.).
York was held off the scoreboard through the first two innings
against the right-handed Johnson (0-7). The Spartan bats came alive
in the bottom of the third as they scored eight runs. York added
five runs in the fourth as the game ended in the top of the fifth
as the Bison went down in order against Corrine Majczan.
In the second game, York scored early and often as the Spartans
scored two or more runs in every inning. The two big innings came
in the second (10 runs) and the third (eight runs). Majczan (8-3)
went the distance for her second win of the day and eighth win on
the season.
GU freshman Nicole O'Malley
(Fredericksburg, Va.) had a tough day as she threw 117 pitches in
three innings of work. She allowed 20 runs (six earned) on 19 hits
as she walked seven, hit one and threw two wild pitches. The Bison
defense also committed six errors in the game.
The Bison scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning
as Johnson led off with a double and later scored on a ground out
by junior Felicia Williams (Marlton, N.J.).
Johnson had Gallaudet's only two hits in the 21-run loss.
GU has lost eight straight, all conference games, since its one
win back on April 2.
Gallaudet will need to bounce back on Saturday, April 10,
against Wesley College on the road in Dover, Del. The Wolverines
have the same 0-10 CAC record as the Bison and if one team can win
two games they will earn the No. 6 seed in next week's CAC
tournament. If the team's split the doubleheader the final
spot in the CAC tournament will come down to a coin flip.
