Box Score 2 DOVER, Del. – The two winless teams in
the Capital Athletic Conference softball standings played a
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with a bid to next week's
conference tournament on the line. Wesley College (6-28, 2-10 CAC)
locked up the No. 6 seed as the Wolverines swept the two games 9-0
and 8-3 against visiting Gallaudet University (1-21, 0-12 CAC).
This was Gallaudet's last CAC softball games in program
history as the Bison, a charter member of the conference, is
leaving this summer to join the North Eastern Athletic
Conference.
Wesley scored a run in every inning in the first game as the
Wolverines won in five innings. Wesley scored one run in the first,
four in the second and twice in the third and fourth innings. The
Bison knocked out seven hits led by freshman Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) with two hits but GU was held
off the scoreboard. Gallaudet had a hit in every inning but the
fifth. Sophomore Michelin Barron (Frederick, Md.)
had the only extra-base hit with a double in the fourth. Junior
pitcher Mandie Smith (Chicago, Ill.) hurled the
first two innings of play as she suffered the loss.
In the second game, both teams traded runs early as the game was
tied at 1-1. Wesley scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the
second as a Bison error allowed the Wolverines to get the lead and
never look back.
The Bison left the bases loaded twice, in the second and third
inning, against the Wolverines and could only score once. GU had
runners in scoring position in five of the seven innings. The Bison
left 10 runners on base. The Bison scored two runs in the top of
the seventh to cut the Wolverine lead to five, 8-3.
Freshman shortstop Kara Gulvas (Crown Point,
Ind.) led the Bison attack in the second game with two hits, one
run scored and two RBI. Every starting batter in the GU line-up got
a hit in the game as the Bison recorded 10 hits.
Junior Alicia Balzer (Montgomery Village, Md.)
suffered the loss as she made her first appearance in the circle
for the Bison since April 2. Balzer went the distance where she
allowed eight runs (three earned) off six hits, one walk, one hit
batter and two strikeouts.
GU has lost 10 straight and will continue its busy three-day
stretch tomorrow (Sunday, April 11) with a home non-conference
doubleheader against Rosemont. The first game begins at Noon. As of
right now these are the final home games for the Bison in 2010.
Gallaudet is trying to make-up a postponed doubleheader at home but
no confirmation has been announced at this time.
