McDaniel takes advantage of Gallaudet pitching woes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was a rough day in the pitching circle for Gallaudet University softball players Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) and Nicole O'Malley (Fredericksburg, Va.) as the freshmen suffered losses to the hands of McDaniel College on Thursday afternoon. The Green Terror swept the non-conference doubleheader as they plated 21 runs in each five-inning game to win 21-3, 21-2.

The Bison pitching duo combined to pass out 27 walks, toss 19 wild pitches and hit nine batters as Gallaudet (0-8) remains winless to begin the 2010 season. McDaniel plated 21 runs for the first time since 1999 and scored 20 or more runs in a doubleheader sweep for the first time since 1996.

O'Malley (0-2) started the first game and pitched the complete game as the Green Terror (9-7) scored 10 runs in the first inning. McDaniel scored two or more runs in every inning of the first game against O'Malley. Shortstop Lauren Toomey led the way with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate for McDaniel as she knocked in four runs. O'Malley surrendered 21 runs (14 earned) on 17 hits and 11 walks.

In the second game, Johnson kept the game within reach for the first two innings as McDaniel only led 6-0. The Green Terror then erupted for 10 runs in the third and tacked on five more in the fourth. The teams scrambled to get the final inning in as darkness and a rainstorm lingered. McDaniel scored 21 runs in the second game on an astounding eight hits. In fact no McDaniel player had more than one hit in the second game. Beth Ann Fusco hit her second triple of the day in the 10-run third.

Johnson (0-2) pitched three innings where she allowed 16 runs on five hits as she walked 13 batters, hit six, threw 11 wild pitches and struck out two batters. O'Malley relieved Johnson in the second game and pitched the final two innings.

The Bison scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game and two runs in the fourth of the second game.

Offensively for Gallaudet, designated player Jessica Buckwalter (Palmyra, Mo.) had a hit in each game including a double in the second game. Freshman Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) had a double in the first game and junior Mandie Smith (Chicago, Ill.) had a double in the second game for GU.

The Bison are slated to host Mt. Aloysius in a doubleheader tomorrow (Friday, March 26) at 3 p.m. weather permitting.
