Salisbury defeats Gallaudet by 39 points

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - After becoming the first Salisbury University women's basketball team to lose to Gallaudet University in nearly a decade the Sea Gulls bounced back with a 87-48 win on Wednesday night at the Maggs Center in the final Capital Athletic Conference regular-season meeting between the two schools.

Gallaudet (10-9, 5-7 CAC) falls from fourth-place in the CAC to sixth with less than three weeks to go before the conference tournament. The Bison have four conference games left this season to try and better their position in the standings. This is the final season for Gallaudet in the CAC as the Bison will join the North Eastern Athletic Conference next year.

The 39-point loss is the worst for the Bison this season as GU has dropped two straight and five of the last six games. Earlier this season, Gallaudet beat Salisbury 69-68 to snap a 22-game losing streak to the Sea Gulls that dated back to February 24, 2000.

Things did not start right for the Bison as Salisbury (8-11, 5-6 CAC) jumped out to a 21-4 lead just over seven minutes in. Junior center Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) hit back-to-back jumpers and freshman guard Maddie Morgan (Frederick, Md.) drained a three-pointer to pull within 10, 21-11, to stop the Sea Gull run for a moment. GU could only muster five more points before halftime as the Bison trailed 42-16 at the break.

This isn't the first time Gallaudet trailed by a large margin at halftime against Salisbury as two seasons ago the Sea Gulls led 45-16 at the half and embarrassed the Bison with  55-point loss, 96-41, on January 12, 2008.

Hayes tried to help Gallaudet close the gap in the second half as she scored 17 of her season-high 24 points in the final 20 minutes of play. She added six rebounds and two blocks in the loss. Junior center Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) was held to eight points, four in each half, as she grabbed six rebounds and made three steals. The Bison, who have been hampered by injuries as of late, had to turn to different players for offense on Wednesday. A nice surprise off the bench was the play of freshman Katelyn Jurney (Tulsa, Okla.) who scored nine points, all from three-pointers in the second half.

Gallaudet shot a dismal 28.6 percent from the field in the first half before it finished with a 38.5 percent (15-for-39) for the game. The Bison also committed a season-high 33 turnovers (19 in the first half) which led to 38 Salisbury points.

The Sea Gulls didn't show any mercy as the SU starting five players finished the game on the floor. Guard Glen Charlton scored two of her team-high 18 points on a jumper with 45 seconds left in the game. Forward Kylie Hall had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Gallaudet is slated to travel to Frederick, Md., this Saturday, February 6, to play Hood College at Fort Detrick at 4 p.m. in another CAC game, weather permitting.
