Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The light snow flurries that
fell Monday evening in the nation's capital did not postpone the
Gallaudet University men's basketball game with Capital Athletic
Conference foe University of Mary Washington at the Field House as
the visiting Eagles defeated the Bison 74-62 before a crowd of 225.
The game had originally been scheduled for January 30 but was
wiped out by one of the multiple snowstorms that have hit the
Washington metropolitan area over the past few weeks. The Gallaudet
coaching staff observed Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers
campaign, which is a collaborative initiative of the American
Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches
(NABC), tonight after it had originally been scheduled for the end
of January. The Bison coaches wore sneakers for the game to
demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its
vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
Gallaudet (4-16, 0-14 CAC) cut the Mary Washington lead to five,
two different times, in the final 10 minutes of play in the second
half. The last came with 3:23 left in regulation as senior guard
Johnny Jackson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) drained two
free-throw attempts to cap a 6-0 Gallaudet run since the
five-minute mark. UMW (9-12, 6-7 CAC) answered with its own 6-0 run
to put the game away.
Sophomore Tony Tatum (Birmingham, Ala.) led the
way for the Bison with 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and
one steal. Tatum scored five points in the closing seconds for
Gallaudet before halftime as UMW led by three, 31-28, at the break.
Junior Bobby Siebert (St. Paul, Minn.) and
freshman Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio) both
reached double figures as the pair scored 10 points apiece. Kelly
added eight rebounds and four assists.
All-CAC center Brandon Altmann, who was selected as a pre-season
All-American this season, was held to zero points in the first half
as he picked up two quick fouls and only played nine minutes for
UMW. The second half was a different story as he picked up a
double-double as he went for 18 points and 10 rebounds in 17
minutes of action. He finished the game with 12 rebounds and five
assists in 26 minutes on the court.
Gallaudet was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in
the second half as the Bison finished the game with an 81.3 percent
showing (13-for-16) from the line. UMW shot over 50 percent from
the field in each half and finished with a 51 percent performance
(25-for-49), which included nine three-pointers. The Eagles
outrebounded the Bison, 35-29, and received 21 bench points
compared to Gallaudet's 14.
The Bison have a tough road ahead of them over the course of the
week, as Gallaudet will play four games in five days starting on
Wednesday. GU will welcome St. Mary's (Md.) College (18-3, 10-2
CAC), the conference first-place team who is nationally ranked (No.
18), for an 8 p.m. game. The Bison will then hit the road for two
non-conference games before hosting York (Pa.) College (17-5, 9-4
CAC), the second-place team in the conference, to close out the
season on Sunday.
