Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Gallaudet University
men's basketball team scored the most points in six games but it
was not enough Saturday on the road against Capital Athletic
Conference foe University of Mary Washington as the Bison lost
91-80 before a crowd of 186.
Gallaudet (4-7, 0-5 CAC) pulled to within nine points midway
through the second half as senior guard Luther
Weedon (Walkersville, Md.) converted a rare four-point
play to pull the Bison to within 58-49. Mary Washington (6-6, 3-1
CAC) pulled away from there as the Eagles outscored the Bison 22-7
over the next six minutes. The Eagles led by as much as 24 and were
now up 80-56 with four minutes to play. Gallaudet didn't give up as
the Bison bench scored 34 of their 45 points in the second half.
Freshman guard Jocus Houston (Baton Rouge, La.)
scored a season-high 15 points, all in the second half, as he
scored eight points in the final minute of play to cut UMW's lead
back to nine.
Houston's 15 points was a team-high as the Bison had five
players reach double point figures. Weedon chipped in 14 while
freshman forward Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio)
scored 13 points and brought down a team-high five rebounds in his
second game of the season. Sophomore guard Brandon
McMillan (Frederick, Md.) drained four three-pointers for
12 points while senior guard Johnny Jackson
(Tuscaloosa, Ala.) added 10 points and a team-high three steals.
Freshman Joshua Sisco (Spartanburg, S.C.) made his
first collegiate start and was a point shy of double figures with
nine points in 12 minutes of action.
Mary Washington trailed briefly to Gallaudet early on but the
Eagles regained the lead just over three minutes into the game. GU
tied the game at 23 on a Jackson bucket at the 8:53 mark. The game
was close throughout the first half. McMillan hit one of his four
three-pointers right before the half as the Eagles held a slim
36-30 lead at intermission.
UMW outrebounded Gallaudet 42-33 as the Eagles shot 49.1 percent
(28-for-57) from the field. Gallaudet's bench outscored Mary
Washington's 45-31 as the Bison scored 21 points off 21 Eagle
turnovers. UMW was led by Bart Reese who netted a game-high 19
points off the bench. UMW also had five players reach double
figures in points. Center Brandon Altmann recorded a double-double
with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.
Gallaudet will next host Hood College on Wednesday, January 13,
at 8 p.m. in the Field House as the Bison aim for their first
conference win this season.
