ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Gallaudet University
volleyball team finished in third-place at the Blue Jay Classic
hosted by Elizabethtown College as the Bison won three of their
four matches. Senior outside hitter Justine Jeter
(Noblesville, Ind.) was selected to the all-tournament team for her
spectacular play for the Buff and Blue.
Gallaudet (7-6) defeated Washington, D.C., foe Catholic
University of America in five sets, 3-2, in the third-place match
on Saturday afternoon. The Bison lost the first set but rallied to
win the second, third and the decisive fifth set by the scores of
21-25, 26-24, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13. Jeter led the way with 24 kills,
11 digs and two block solos. Two other Bison recorded
double-doubles in senior Amanda Krieger (Carmel,
Ind.), 13 kills and 15 digs, and freshman Ann
Whited (Fishers, Ind.), 14 kills and 13 digs.
The Bison's two other wins, both 3-0 victories, from the two-day
tournament came against Wentworth Institute of Technology on
Saturday and Neumann University on Friday evening. GU defeated WIT
25-11, 25-10 and 25-17. Freshman Mari Klassen
(British Columbia, Canada) was on her service game as she had 11
service aces in the three-set win. The Bison defeated Neumann
25-21, 25-16, 25-21 after GU started the first set down eight
points but after a key timeout the momentum switched to Gallaudet.
The win against Neumann gave Coach Lynn Ray Boren
his 100th in his career at Gallaudet in five seasons.
Gallaudet's lone loss came against the host Blue Jays from
Elizabethtown, 3-0, on Friday afternoon 26-28, 14-25, 24-26. The
night before the Bison won a hard fought five-set conference match
against Marymount (Va.) University and less than 24 hours later had
to travel to Pennsylvania and play two matches of a tournament.
Jeter finished the tournament with 53 kills, 27 digs, five block
solos and one block assist. Krieger accumulated 37 kills, 34 digs
and 15 service aces and Whited had 34 kills, 30 digs and three
block assists. Sophomore Paige Johnson (North
Richland Hills, Texas) led the team in assists with 118 to go with
18 digs while senior Shana Lehmann (Frederick,
Md.) totaled 86 assists.
No. 23 Eastern University won the tournament as it defeated
Elizabethtown, 3-0, in the championship match on Saturday.
GU will next face Stevenson University on Tuesday, September 29,
on the road in a Capital Athletic Conference match that will begin
at 7 p.m.
