LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Gallaudet University
volleyball program welcomed back head coach Lynn Ray
Boren along with four key players from the 2009
Deaflympics as the Bison posted a 3-1 record at the Lynchburg-Sweet
Briar tournament held here over the weekend. The three wins are the
first for the Bison (3-5) this year.
Gallaudet picked up victories over Roanoke College, Sweet Briar
College and Randolph College. On Sunday, the Buff and Blue swept
Sweet Briar and Randolph with 3-0 shutouts. GU took the first match
against Sweet Briar, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-10 followed by a 25-18,
25-18, 25-14 win over Randolph. The day before the Bison rallied
past Roanoke 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23 to earn the tough 3-1
victory. Lynchburg got the best of Gallaudet in straight sets,
21-25, 18-25, 11-25.
Boren and his four Deaflympic players helped the United States
of America win a silver medal in the 2009 Deaflympics held in
Taipei last week. The return of seniors Justine
Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.), Amanda Krieger
(Carmel, Ind.), Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) and
sophomore Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills,
Texas) were a huge difference for the Bison.
On Saturday, Johnson had 28 assists against Roanoke and 24 in
the loss to Lynchburg. Jeter posted 12 kills against Roanoke and
seven against the Hornets. Lehmann made 18 digs against Roanoke and
11 against Lynchburg. Krieger added six kills in the loss to
Lynchburg. Freshman Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.)
added eight kills against Roanoke and seven against the Hornets.
On Sunday, the quartet was back at it again as Jeter had eight
kills against Sweet Briar and 10 against Randolph while Krieger
added 11 and nine, respectively. Lehmann came up with eight digs in
the first match followed by 10 in the second. Johnson added 23
assists and 34 assists against Sweet Briar and Randolph,
respectively.
For the weekend, Johnson had 109 assists, Lehmann made 47 digs
and Jeter and Krieger knocked home 37 and 31 kills, respectively.
Gallaudet will make its home debut on Thursday, September 24, in
the Field House against Marymount (Va.) University. The Capital
Athletic Conference match will begin at 7 p.m.
