Gallaudet Invitational Plays On with Uninvited Weather

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C.- On Saturday, March 28th, the possibility of the Bison Invitational continuing seemed grim because the softball field was under water.  However, the coaches from each team agreed to use the MSSD football field that doubles as a softball field to keep the tournament alive.  After a two hour delay, the Gallaudet Lady Bison took on New York's St. Joseph's College after a 20 minute warm up.

Defensively, the first inning got off to a rocky start, as Senior Pitcher Kallie Williams, walked 7 players and allowed three hits.  St. Joseph's was able to tally up seven runs in the first inning.  Afterwards, Gallaudet's defense sharpened up and allowed only three runs after the first inning.  Gallaudet struggled offensively, and rallied up two hits.  Williams and outfielder, Rosemary Goodman were the two hits of the game.  Williams managed to score a run for the Lady Bison.  The final score was Gallaudet 1, St. Josephs 10.

Later that same day, Gallaudet faced St. Paul and played a close game, only to come up short 3, with a final score of 14-11.  Sophomore pitcher Alicia Balzer led the team defensively, striking out one and allowing only 15 hits from the 35 people at-bat.  A tight defense allowed the Lady Bison to take the lead until the 5th inning, where St. Paul managed to scrape by with four runs. Offensively, Gallaudet improved, totaling 9 hits, led by Seniors Kallie Williams and Devin Quinn, and Sophomore Balzer, each gettingwith two hits for the game.  Gallaudet's inability to get a hit the final inning cost them the exciting game.

The two-day tournament was held to just one day due to continued bad weather, and the concern about the players' safety on the MSSD field.

The rankings of the tournament went as followed:

First place went to St. Joseph's

Second place went to St. Paul

St. Paul's #11 Farrah Sells took the honor of being the tournament's most outstanding player.

The Lady Bison take the field again on Tuesday March 31 with a double header against York College.  The first of the two games begins at 3pm with the second game to follow at 5 pm.
