WASHINGTON, D.C. - Gallaudet University senior
libero Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) was selected
to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first
team for the College Division - District 2, as selected by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced
Thursday. Lehmann will now be added to the national ballot for the
chance to earn Academic All-American honors, which will be
announced on November 23.
Gallaudet last had an Academic All-American in 1993 and only has
earned two selections total in program history since the inception
of the awards in 1952. Wayne Langbein was named to
the men's at-large second team for track and field in 1993 and
Brian Bippus was selected to the men's basketball
second team in 1991. Gallaudet is a member of the College Division
(Division II, III, NAIA and 2-year schools) and is in District 2
for CoSIDA Academic honors.
Lehmann holds a 3.93 grade point average and is an elementary
education major. She is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation for
digs per set (6.32). The Frederick, Md., native has tallied a
Capital Athletic Conference best 673 digs in 30 matches played, in
106 sets, to go with 41 assists and 25 service aces. Lehmann was
also a member of the USA deaf volleyball team that earned a silver
medal in the 2009 Deaflympics this past September in Taipei,
Taiwan.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic honors, a student-athlete
must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative
grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached
sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current
institution and be nominated by his/her sports information
director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed
Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in
Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship
sports.
