WASHINGTON, D.C. - The three seniors on the
Gallaudet University volleyball team played stellar in their final
home collegiate appearance at the Field House on Wednesday evening.
Second-seed Gallaudet rolled past seventh-seed University of
Pittsburgh-Bradford, 3-0, in the first round of the 2009 Eastern
College Athletic Conference South Region Championship. The Bison
never allowed the Panthers past 16 points in any set as GU won
25-9, 25-12, 25-16.
Senior Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) tied the
Capital Athletic Conference career record for digs as she made 26
against the Panthers to tie the mark of 3,021 set by Jill
Crouse-Wolf from York (Pa.) College back in 1996-99. Lehmann
currently has 3,021 career digs in 525 sets played since 2005. She
sat out last season after she suffered an injury two games into the
season. She is on pace to break Crouse-Wolf's other CAC career
record for digs per game average of 5.64 per set. Lehmann currently
has an average of 5.75.
Gallaudet (25-14) will face third-seed Widener University
(22-15) on Saturday, November 14, at 1:30 p.m. in the second
semifinal in Center Valley, Pa., on the campus of top-seed DeSales
University (22-8). DeSales beat eighth-seed Penn State-Altoona,
3-1, on Wednesday night and will face fifth-seed St. Vincent
(23-10) in the first semifinal on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Bearcats
crawled their way past fourth-seed and defending ECAC champion Penn
State-Behrend with a 3-2 victory. Widener defeated sixth-seed
Swarthmore, 3-1, in the final first round match-up on Wednesday.
The ECAC championship match will take place at 4 p.m. at Billera
Hall.
Senior outside hitter Amanda Krieger (Carmel,
Ind.) was lights out in the first set as she made nine of her
game-high 20 kills. She added two service aces as the Bison rolled
to a 25-9 set win. GU led 10-2 early on before the Bison pulled
away behind the service game of senior outside hitter
Justine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) and Krieger's
strong hitting upfront. Krieger had six kills during an eight-point
run as Jeter served. Jeter finished the game with 12 kills and 10
digs. Krieger also added 10 digs to go with three service aces.
The second set started much like the first as Gallaudet staked
itself to an 11-2 lead and increased the lead to 17-6 before
Pittsburgh-Bradford (18-6) called timeout. There was no stopping
the Bison in the match as they stampeded past the Panthers in the
third and final set.
Freshman Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) added eight
kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Paige Johnson
(North Richland Hills, Texas) passed out 34 assists, recorded 12
digs and served up two service aces in the victory.
