WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University
volleyball team salvaged a split in its two matches on Saturday at
the Field House on Homecoming Weekend. The Bison ran into a tough
Lebanon Valley College team to start the day and lost 3-0 but ended
the day on a high note with a 3-0 win over The University of
Scranton.
The matches represented the final home regular-season games for
three key seniors for the Bison. After the Scranton match the team
played tribute to Justine Jeter (Noblesville,
Ind.), Amanda Krieger (Carmel, Ind.) and
Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) as family and
friends cheered on the trio.
"We will definitely miss them. They are the main reason for
keeping Gallaudet volleyball at the top NCAA Division III level,"
said Gallaudet coach Lynn Ray Boren, in his fifth
season at his Alma Mater. "The three of them have wonderful
dedication to the Bison volleyball program in-season and in the
off-season. They have proved that they are capable of playing at
the highest level possible. We respect them in their future
endeavors on and off the volleyball court."
Gallaudet played all of its players in the 25-20, 25-14, 26-24
victory over the Royals from Scranton (6-19). Krieger (17 kills, 10
digs) and Jeter (16 kills, 11 digs) led the way with double-doubles
and Lehmann added 32 digs.
Lebanon Valley got the best of the Bison in the morning match as
Gallaudet made too many errors that the Dutchmen (26-2) took
advantage of in the 22-25, 26-28, 17-25 win. As a team the Bison
made 19 attack errors, hit at a .197 percentage and tallied 12
service errors.
"We were not at our top performance against LVC. We made a lot of
mental errors," said Boren. "LVC is an excellent team that
makes few errors and takes advantage of your mistakes."
Lebanon Valley defeated Scranton 3-0 in the other match on
Saturday.
The pair of Krieger (20 kills, 11 digs) and Jeter (17 kills, 13
digs) paced the Bison with two more double-doubles in the loss.
Lehmann made 15 digs while sophomore Paige Johnson
(North Richland Hills, Texas) passed out 40 assists.
Gallaudet's three seniors got a late start to the season as they
were members of USA deaf volleyball team. The team, coached by
Boren, won silver medals at the 2009 Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan.
In the past four seasons, the Bison have posted a 91-50 record and
accumulated some impressive career statistics since 2006.
Jeter has 1,141 kills, 796 digs, 158 service aces and 183 blocks
while Krieger has amassed 955 kills, 969 digs and 215 service aces.
Lehmann, who was injured most of last season, has tallied 2,799
digs and 176 assists since the '05 season.
The Bison have six more regular-season matches before the start
of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Gallaudet will next
travel to Dover, Del., on Monday, October 26, to face Wesley
College at 7 p.m. in a CAC match.
