Playing their best defense of the year, Gallaudet held Marymount
to just 61 points. The Gallaudet offense had trouble making shots,
scoring just 52, which wasn't enough.
Marymount is the top defensive team in the Capital Athletic
Conference, but Gallaudet was able to get penetration and pass the
ball to the open man all game, but when they shot the ball, they
were not able to get the shots to fall, shooting 15-52, including
6-25 from beyond the 3-point line.
The Bison dug themselves a big hole falling behind 17-9 in the
game's first 11 minutes, then 27-15 with 5 minutes left in the
first half. At half-time it was 33-24.
In the second half, Sekoe White picked up
his third foul 2 minutes into the half, and went to the bench for
the next 4 minutes. In the first eight minutes of the second
half, Gallaudet was outscored 14-5. With 11:15 left in the game,
and the score 49-31 Gallaudet Head Coach Jeb Barber called a
time-out. Whatever Coach Barber said during that time-out worked
because Gallaudet went on a 12-0 run over the next six minutes,
outhustling Marymount for rebounds and racing down the court for
easy shots, to make the score 49-43 with 5:26 left in the game.
After a 3 by White with 3:49 left, the score was 54-48, but the
Bison continued to miss shots that would've made the game closer.
The closest Gallaudet got was 57-52 on a fast break lay-up by Tony Tatum.
Marymount scored the games' final four points.
Jon Mowl led the
Bison with 16 points. White added 15 and Tatum had 12.
Coach Barber called the second half defense today, "The best I
have seen all year. If we continue to play that way it will
turn into wins."
Gallaudet is now 9-9 this season. They next play Saturday
afternoon as part of Alumni Basketball Madness vs. Wesley College
at 4 pm at the Field House.
