It
was the Lady Bison's first home game of the 2008 season, and
expectations were high as over 300 fans piled into the Gallaudet
Field House, ready for another exciting season of volleyball. To
win this game meant the Bison would have to hand the opposing team
their first loss of their season: Stevenson University was 12-0
going into this game, which also marked the home-court debut of
freshman setter Paige Johnson (N. Richland Hills, TX/Texas School
for the Deaf) . The first game got off to a slow start for
the Bison as the women found themselves down 2-9 to open the game.
But the women, through tenacious defense, managed to get themselves
back into the game when they tied the score at 19-19 after two
straight blocks. It was neck and neck as the first game winded
down, but Gallaudet won 26-24.
The second game
saw Gallaudet and Stevenson switching errors back and forth and
ultimately, Stevenson won the error-laden game 25-22. The third
game saw Stevenson build up a 9-6 lead, and they never looked back,
always having a three or four point cushion which led them to win
the third game easily 25-18.
The fourth game
was Gallaudet's final chance to ensure they stayed in the
match, and it looked bleak. At one point, Stevenson led by as many
as ten points, but Gallaudet slowed down the pace of the game and
tied the score 20-20, and had the lead at one point when Johnson
had a block, 21-20. But the lead was short-lived and Stevenson won
the game, and the match, 27-25.
Junior outside
hitter Justine Jeter (Noblesville, IN/Indiana School for the Deaf)
led the Lady Bison with eleven kills, two assists, and one block.
Johnson in her first home game tallied an impressive 41 assists to
go along with four kills.
The Lady Bison travel to Greencastle, Indiana this weekend where
they will play in the Depauw Invitational Sept. 19 at 2 pm vs.
Heidelberg and 4 pm vs. Franklin, followed by an 11:30 am game
Sept. 20 vs. Rose-Hulman.
