After starting the season 4-0, the Gallaudet men's basketball
team headed across town to face their first Capital Athletic
Conference foe, Marymount, and despite a dramatic second half
comeback, Gallaudet suffered their first defeat of the season
84-79.
The score was 25-24 in favor of Marymount with 8:05 left in the
first half, with several lead changes, before Marymount went on a
16-4 run, which helped them go into halftime up by 11, 46-35.
Early in the second half Marymount increased the lead to 18
points with 17 minutes left, before Gallaudet slowly cut away at
the lead. With the score 56-41, Gallaudet went on an 8-0 run of a
pair of 3's by Jon
Mowl and a jumper by Jeremy Thrush. With 6
minutes left, Gallaudet got within 3 on a pair of free throws by Sekoe White. That
would be as close as Gallaudet would get as both teams traded
baskets and free throws the remainder of the game, and Gallaudet
made several big steals in the games' final minute but couldn't
catch Marymount.
One of the keys to the game was field goal shooting. Gallaudet
took 9 more shots than Marymount, but was only able to convert
40%, compared to 52.5% for Marymount. The Bison did a good job
protecting the ball, giving up 12 turnovers, while causing
Marymount to commit 22.
Mowl led the Bison with 24 points, including 4 3-pointers, and
added 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in 39 minutes of
action. White scored 18 points, and added 6 rebounds and 4
assists. Tony
Tatum scored 16 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and had 2 steals
and one blocked shot. Johnny Jackson, Jr.
added 13 points.
After the game, Gallaudet
Head Coach Jeb Barber praised his team for not giving up in the
second half. "It was a hard fought game. I'm proud of
the team for the way they stuck with it. The players can hold their
heads high and look forward to the next game."
Gallaudet is now 4-1 on the season. They travel to Delaware to
play at Wesley College Saturday, at 4 p.m.
