ARLINGTON, VA--Marymount trailed 40-37 at the
intermission as the Bison came out shooting 57.1 percent in the
first half including going 6-12 in threes. The Buff and Blue
held the Saints to a modest 42.9 percent.
The second half saw both teams get even hotter --
the Saints shot 65.2 percent while Gallaudet held its own at 63.6
percent. The difference was in the defense as Marymount
forced nine second half turnovers (17 for the game) while limiting
their own total to nine for the game.
The Saints gained the lead for good at the 4:22
mark following a three by Corey Diamond. Two free-throws by
Fred Stanback built the lead to three with 3:34 remaining.
And the Saints finished their scoring with five points by
Bryant Majors and two more free throws by Mike Gray. A
three-point shot by Bison Jonathan Valencia fell short as
time expired.
Marymount had a strong performance from the
free-throw line -- hitting 17-20, or 85 percent. Mike Gray
went 10-11 from the charity line -- and had 26 points in all.
Corey Diamond, playing in his final regular season game at home,
tallied 24 points including five three-pointers. He also had
five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Jonathan Valencia led the Bison with 27 points (6-9
in threes), with Sekoe White adding 24 points and a game-high seven
rebounds. Sophomore Jon Mowl had a double-double, collecting
12 points and dishing 12 assists. The Bison finish their season at
4-21, 1-15 CAC.
Two Bison players ended their season in the top 20
for the regular season conference-wide scoring rankings: Junior
Sekoe White ranked 10th at 16.6 points-per-game, with 414 total
points on the season; freshman Jonathan Valencia took 16th, at 13.5
PPG and 270 points total in 20 games. White also ranked in the top
20 for rebounding, finishing with a 6.5 average on 162 total boards
in 25 games. White also finished at #6 overall for offensive
rebounds (65 total; 2.6 ORPG). Fellow inside man Onye Davis
(junior) had a 5.6 RPG average, with 141 grabs in 25 games,
taking the #16 post.
Sophomore Jon Mowl currently leads the
regular-season conference rankings in assists, with 5.4 a game, 136
total over 25 games. He also has three other top-ten finishes, #6
for free throws, 52-65, or 81 percent; #4 for steals, 48 in 25
games, good for a 1.92 average. Mowl tied CAC leading scorer Ray
Williams (Salisbury U.) in three-points made, taking the
four-spot at 66 on the season, with a 2.6 per-game average.
Look for these rising Bison stars to build from
their learning experiences this season, and have a strong
performance in 2007-08!
