A Young Team Continues Learning

FREDERICKSBURG, VA (1/13/07)—The Buff and Blue hoopsters faced a formidable task as they challenged the Mary Washington Eagles on their home court in conference play. The 3rd ranked (CAC) Eagles started of sluggish, with the Bison leading at one point in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Shots were traded, and the score remained deadlocked at 23-23, until a layup by Eagle Justin Baker sparked a 20-9 run that culminated in a 97-53 loss for the Bison.
"We need to cut down on our turnovers [the Bison committed 34], even though we started off strong, the lack of experience on our team became obvious," Coach James DeStefano pondered. The Eagles scored 54 points in the 2nd half in contrast to the Bison's 23. Overall, both teams were nearly even in field goal shooting, with the Bison finishing at 50% and U-MW at 47%. The proverbial nail in the coffin came from the Eagles' long-range shooting, where they made 20 of 41 three-pointers.
Freshman guard Johnny Jackson had a career-high 17 points and 6 rebounds in 31 minutes, with teammate Sekoe White paving the way, collecting 19 points and 8 boards, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots and a steal. Jackson also had 2 assists and a steal. Sophomore Jon Mowl finished with 8 points, 2 assists.
The Bison (2-10, 0-5 CAC) have a short break until they host St. Mary's College of Maryland (6-7, 1-4 CAC) at The Field House on Wednesday, January 17th. The ball goes up at 8:00 p.m.
