Washington, D.C. (12/9/06)— The Lady Bison came back from
an opening Lady Sea Gull 5-0 lead off a Kallie Williams trey that
danced with the rim before falling, 5-3. Williams swiftly
followed her opening act with another dial-in from downtown off a
Tamijo Foronda assist to tie the game 6-6 at the 16:09 mark.
Salisbury went to the full court press in hopes of breaking the
Bison momentum. Several Sea Gull picks led to baskets off the
Bison defense. Gallaudet's aim was to keep the momentum
on their side and to control the pace against Salisbury's
press.
Shabnam Razmpour drained a bucket to bring the Bison within
five, and then Tamijo Foronda put up an in-your-face shot from the
paint to close the gap to three, 13-10. Jessica Salisbury
scored one of her five points from the paint to keep the game
within 5 points despite Sea Gull Meghan Phillips' performance
from downtown (she scored 21 points in the first half, partially
off 5-for-9 long-distance shooting).
Coach Kylan Loney called a time-out to rally her troops and
re-evaluate strategy. Senior guard Stacy Jones took heed,
forcing a turnover to set up another one of Razmpour's 12
points. Salisbury's Phillips missed a trey and then
Lady Bison Jones scored off a Razmpour dish to get within one,
17-16 at the 7-minute mark.
The Lady Sea Gull defense continued its full-court press and
managed to get five additional points to extend their lead,
22-16. However, Bison freshman Justine Jeter was sent to the
line and made one of two free throws to start a rally. Senior
guard Pia Marie Paulone hit a shot in the paint off a Williams trey
miss to bridge the Sea Gull gap, 22-19. Razmpour hit another
shot after two Meghan Phillips treys, and it was clear what the
Bison game plan would be once the second half started. The
Lady Bison had to contain the 5'6 Phillips as the first half
expired with Salisbury ahead 35-23.
The Lady Bison opened the 2nd half with a box set-up on defense
where four players would be on the corners of the paint covering in
zone, with one rover, covering Phillips woman-on-woman.
Eventually, this defense worked as Phillips only managed a basket
in the second half to finish her afternoon with 23 points.
The Sea Gulls jumped ahead 37-23 and stayed in front the rest of
the way despite several rally efforts from the Lady Bison. A
21-7 Sea Gull rally ensued shortly afterwards despite challenges
from the Bison defense, including reducing the Sea Gull
long-distance threat from 35% in the first half to just 10% in the
second. The Lady Bison dominated the free throw line,
shooting 77%, and pulling off a 9-0 run in 2 minutes. The Sea
Gulls eventually prevailed with depth off their bench, pulling out
a 67-45 win.
Tamijo Foronda led the team with 14 points, and Shabnam
“Shabby” Razmpour was right behind with 12 points and
paired Foronda with 6 rebounds. Kallie Williams had 6, and
Jessica Salisbury added 5, with a team-high 3 steals. Pia
Marie Paulone and freshman Brittainy Payne led the Lady Bison
Boards, each pulling down 8 apiece. Both Payne and Razmpour
were 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, while Foronda went 6-for-9.
The Lady Bison begin their winter break and do not have a game
until the 2007 home opener against Wilson College at The Field
House on Monday, January 8th. The ball goes up at 6:00 p.m.
