McCabe provides spark for Bison in return against Washington Adventist

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University men's soccer team received a shot in the arm Wednesday evening when sophomore goalie John McCabe (Norwalk, Conn.) was back in between the pipes for the Bison. McCabe, who left the second game of the season with an injury, returned and made 19 saves in a 3-1 loss to Washington Adventist University at Hotchkiss Field.

McCabe was under constant duress throughout the game as Washington Adventist, a NAIA program, controlled 71 percent of the possession and finished with 44 shots. McCabe was able to turn aside 19 of the 22 attempts put on goal by the Shock (1-2). The 19-save performance is the second highest in McCabe's career.

Gallaudet (0-5) got on the scoreboard in the 77th minute when first-year midfielder Eli Matamoros (Richmond, Va.) converted a penalty kick for his first collegiate goal to cut the deficit to 3-1. Matamoros accounted for all three Bison shots in the contest, including a shot less than two minutes after kickoff.

Washington Adventist, located in nearby Takoma Park, Md., didn't break through until the 32nd minute when Kemar King scored off an assist from Victor Perez. Gaddiel Amparo added a second goal just over three minutes later, also off a Perez assist, as the Shock took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

George Decoraes extended Washington Adventist's advantage to 3-0 in the 51st minute. McCabe shut the door from there despite continued pressure from the visitors. The sophomore made 14 saves in the second half and stopped all 13 shots on goal he faced over the final 39-plus minutes.

Prior to the game, Gallaudet and Washington Adventist observed a moment of silence in memory of WAU students Jeremy Lopez and Michelle Reyes, who died in a car accident last Friday in Delaware. Reyes was a member of the Washington Adventist cross country team. Wednesday's contest marked the first men's soccer game for the Shock since the tragedy.

  • McCabe has now posted his top two save totals of his career (22 and 19) in the first two complete games this season.
  • Shock goalie Anghelo Villacorta did not record a save.
  • Gallaudet's two-goal margin was the closest against Washington Adventist since a 2-1 setback in 2021.
  • The men's soccer program held its annual Mental Health Awareness Day in partnership with the Gallaudet Athletics Department and Gallaudet's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

Gallaudet will travel to Staunton, Va., on Saturday, Sept. 19, to face Mary Baldwin University (2-2-1) in the Bison's final non-conference game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
