JAMAICA, N.Y. – On a day carrying special significance in both New York City and Washington, D.C., the Gallaudet University men's soccer team took the field Friday afternoon against York (N.Y.) College on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The Bison kept things close during the opening portion of the non-conference contest before the Cardinals pulled away for a 9-0 victory.
York (1-2) scored the game's first goal in the 16th minute, but Gallaudet (0-4) kept the deficit at one for the next 12 minutes. The Cardinals then struck twice in a span of 44 seconds in the 28th and 29th minutes to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime.
Sophomore forward
Xavier De Leon (Methuen, Mass.) led Gallaudet's offensive effort with four shots. De Leon registered the Bison's first attempt just over three minutes into the game and later put a shot on goal in the 43rd minute that was stopped by York sophomore goalkeeper Alexander Cruz. De Leon added two more attempts in the second half.
Cruz made two saves to record the shutout as Gallaudet put two of its six shots on goal.
First-year
Donovan Schneck (Columbus, Ohio) made his second consecutive start in goal for the Bison. Schneck, normally a defender, made seven saves while playing all 90 minutes.
York broke the game open early in the second half with five goals during a 13-minute stretch to extend its advantage to 8-0. The Cardinals added their final goal in the 86th minute.
The Cardinals finished with a 24-6 advantage in shots and a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. York held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore midfielder Derick Aboagye-Frimpong led York with five goals and two assists while fellow sophomore forward Christopher Garcia recorded a hat trick.

Gallaudet returns home to Hotchkiss Field on Wednesday, Sept. 16, to host Washington Adventist University (0-2) in a non-conference game at 5 p.m.
