ASHLAND, Va. – Gallaudet University faced two tough opponents here Saturday on the second day of the Macon Invitational inside Crenshaw Gymnasium on the campus of Randolph-Macon College.
Gallaudet went the distance against Bridgewater (Va.) College to begin the afternoon as the Bison took a 2-1 lead before the Eagles swept the final two sets to win 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 25-14, 15-10.
The Bison turned around and went up against the host Yellow Jackets, who are receiving votes in the current American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 coaches poll. Randolph-Macon (7-1) packed a punch and stung the Bison with a straight-set sweep of 10-25, 16-25, 18-25.
Gallaudet (1-5) went 1-3 on the weekend as the Bison defeated Regent University on Friday night but lost three matches to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) teams.
Sophomore outside hitter
Zachary Bippus (Fishers, Ind.) was named to the all-tournament team as he finished the four matches with 40 kills on 117 swings and 24 errors to go with 34 digs and eight aces.
Bippus led the Bison with 15 kills, 10 digs and three aces against Bridgewater while sophomore
Kodi Lee (Austin, Texas) tallied nine kills and 13 digs. Sophomore setter
Troy Holcomb (Fremont, Calif.) passed out 30 assists and made 11 digs to secure the double-double. GU finished with nine aces and seven blocks against the Eagles.
UP NEXT
Gallaudet is slated to face Hood College at home this Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. but that match may be rescheduled until later this season.
