WASHINGTON –The shots were raining in from outside here Saturday as one team made 11 3-pointers in the Field House. Unfortunately, Gallaudet University finished the game with four 3-pointers while Wilson College was one shy of a dozen from outside as the Phoenix shined brightly in an 86-75 United East men's basketball victory.
Gallaudet (2-13, 1-7 United East) shot over 50 percent from the field but struggled from 3-point range where the Bison made 4 of 19 shots (21.1 percent). The two teams made nearly the same amount of field goals (Gallaudet – 32, Wilson – 31) but the seven additional 3-pointers were a big difference for Wilson (6-13, 2-5 United East).
The Bison led for the majority of the first half before the Phoenix scored the final seven points in under two minutes to take a 41-34 lead into the locker room.
Wilson held a 45-41 edge in scoring over the course of the final 20 minutes of play.
GU sophomore guard/forward
Alex Ortman (Norway, Mich.) scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as he was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. Earlier this week, Ortman set a career-high with 28 points in a win at Penn St.-Berks.
Sophomore forward
Wyatt Carlson (Hubertus, Wis.) set a new career high with 21 points as he made 8 of 11 shots from the field and went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore guard
Brandon Washington (Citronelle, Ala.) led the Bison with nine rebounds (seven defensive) while senior guard
Bruce Brewer Jr. (Santa Fe, N.M.) and sophomore guard
Jory Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) passed out seven assists each.
The Phoenix starting five scored nine or more points each. Armani Jones led the way with 23 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Jaylin Davis chipped in 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals while Jalen Pierce had a double-double with 11 points and 12 assists and grabbed eight boards. Jalen Bowie checked in with 19 points, five rebounds, five assists in the win.
