Sekoe White, '10, named Gallaudet University Head Men's Basketball Coach

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University Athletics Director Warren Keller, '10, has announced Sekoe White, '10, as the new head coach of the Bison men's basketball program. Coach White will begin his new employment at GU on September 29.

White, who is deaf, is no stranger to Gallaudet or the Bison men's basketball program as he wore the buff and blue in the Field House from 2004-07, 2008-09. The Lexington, Ky., native served as a team assistant in 2007-08. In White's senior season (2008-09) he was voted to the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) second team as he set single-season career-high marks of 459 points, 172 rebounds, 41 steals and 20 blocks. In his four seasons at Gallaudet, he totaled 1,166 points, 420 rebounds, 194 assists, 189 blocks and 118 steals. White was a team captain for three seasons (2006-09) and served as President of Gallaudet's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2007-08.
White most recently served as a Gallaudet men's basketball assistant coach during the 2023-24 season.

"I have known Sekoe since we were freshmen classmates here on Kendall Green. I vividly remember that the very first made basket from our team that season was a dunk from him," said Keller. "For a long time, Sekoe has made an impact on the Deaf basketball world and everyone he is associated with. I'm so thrilled that he will be coming back home and making this impact to the Gallaudet men's basketball team, the athletics department, and the rest of the University community."

White is Gallaudet's first Black men's basketball head coach since Adrian Walters led the program in 1991-92. Walters is now the Associate Head Coach for the Texas Tech University women's basketball program.

"This is an incredible honor for me to come back to Gallaudet University, a place that has given me so much, and now serve as Head Coach of the men's basketball program. This opportunity is truly a blessing, and I am committed to giving my very best to our student-athletes," said White. "Hard work will be our standard as we continue building a program of excellence on and off the court. I am looking forward to coaching our student-athletes and watching them grow into great human beings through our basketball program but also providing my full support to the athletics department and the broader Gallaudet community!"

White has extensive coaching experience within the USA Deaf Basketball (USADB) organization. He is currently an assistant coach with USA Deaf Men's Basketball, a position he has held since 2022. White served as head coach of the USA Deaf Men's Basketball U21 World Deaf Basketball Championships (July 2024) and Pan American Deaf Basketball Championships (Nov. 2022) where Team USA won gold and bronze, respectively. White even played for the USA Deaf Basketball Team and won two gold medals at the Deaflympics (2005, '09).

White served as the Boys' Varsity Basketball Head Coach at the Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson, Miss., from 2016 until 2022 and even coached one season in 2013-14. He also coached the Mississippi School for the Deaf Girls' Varsity Basketball program from 2020-22. White has also spent time coaching basketball at Indiana School for the Deaf (2014-15) and New Mexico School for the Deaf (2010-12).

White graduated from Gallaudet in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. He later earned a Master of Science in Leadership at Belhaven University in May 2019.

White is married to Amber White and they have five children; Sanaa Green, Khloe Green, Shaniya White, Jamel White Jr. and Jacee White.
