Bison drop tri-match at Penn St.-Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Gallaudet University men's volleyball team dropped a tri-match here Saturday to Randolph College and host Penn St.-Altoona.

Gallaudet (0-7) was swept by both teams in non-conference matches. Randolph (3-7), who played Penn St.-Altoona (6-5) on Friday and Saturday, defeated the Bison 25-18, 25-19, 25-19. The WildCats split the series with Penn St.-Altoona with a 3-1 win on Friday night and lost in straight sets on Saturday.

GU was led by first-year opposite Zachary Bippus (Fishers, Ind.) in the match against Randolph. Bippus finished with 11 kills, four digs and three blocks (one solo). First-year outside hitter Ben Beyer (Janesville, Wis.) added eight kills while first-year setter Troy Holcomb (Fremont, Calif.) passed out 24 assists and made six digs. First-year libero Elian Zfati (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a team-high nine digs. First-year middle hitter Tyler Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) finished with three blocks.

Randolph was paced by Mats Beentjes' 11-kill and 10-dig performance to record a double-double.

In Gallaudet's second match on Saturday the host Lions won 25-17, 25-22, 25-16.

Bippus tallied seven kills while Beyer and Holcomb finished with five kills each against the host Lions. Holcomb passed out 16 assists and made six digs. Zfati matched Holcomb with six digs and chipped in three assists

The Lions were led by Caleb Fries' seven-kill, five aces, four digs and two blocks performance.
