WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Penn St.-Abington, 78-55, here Saturday afternoon in the Field House.
Gallaudet (0–2) opened the first quarter with an efficient offensive performance, shooting 8-of-13 from the field (61.5%) and going a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. However, Penn St.-Abington (2–2) capitalized on GU's 11 turnovers, converting them into 13 points. The Nittany Lions were led by Amirah Hackney's 11-point outburst as they pulled ahead to take a 26–18 lead at the end of the quarter.
GU managed to stay close as Penn St.-Abington cooled off to 28.6% shooting, but the Nittany Lions continued to take advantage of the Bison's mistakes. GU committed 10 more turnovers in the second quarter, leading to nine points for Abington and allowing the Nittany Lions to build a 10-point halftime lead, 45–35.
In the second half, Penn St.-Abington picked up where it left off, outscoring Gallaudet 19–6 in the third quarter. The Nittany Lions capitalized on GU's cold shooting, as the Bison managed just 1-for-19 from the field in the period.
Gallaudet scored 14 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough to catch the Nittany Lions.
GU had three players score in double digits for the second game in row as first-year forward
Natalie Greene (Fresno, Texas) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and she went 4-for-7 at the free-throw line. Sophomore forward/guard
Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) is second Bison to score 15 points. Schirg added four rebounds and two assists. Schirg went 4-for-6 at the free-throw line. Junior guard
Seanna Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 11 points, and grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists. Sophomore forward
Sophia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) scored nine points and grabbed a career high 10 rebounds.
The Nittany Lions were led by Amirah Hackney, who recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
BISON TRACKS
- First-year forward/center Kayla Debrow (Jacksonsville, Fla.) made her collegiate debut as Debrow scored two points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench
- GU's six made three-pointers were its most in a game since Feb. 25, 2025, also against Penn St.-Abington, when the Bison made seven.
- Gallaudet is now 21–11 against Penn St.-Abington since 2010
