WASHINGTON – It had been a minute since Gallaudet University and Guilford College last squared off in a football game.
In fact, it has been 77 years, and just like that meeting in 1948 the Quakers shut out the Bison. Guilford rolled to a 55-0 win over Gallaudet here Saturday before a crowd of 347 at Hotchkiss Field as the Quakers picked up their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the season.
Guilford (2-3, 1-2 ODAC) snaps a 17-game losing streak in ODAC play, the longest active conference losing streak, dating back to Nov. 5, 2022.
Gallaudet (1-3, 1-2 ODAC) drops its second consecutive conference game in as many weeks as the buff and blue ended up black and blue against the physical Guilford team. The Bison lost key players during the game while the Quakers used an up-tempo offense to move up-and-down the field at ease.
Sophomore quarterback Caleb Robles ran for a game-high 144 yards on 19 carries and scored four first-half touchdowns. Robles completed 19 of 26 for 173 yards and one touchdown.
A promising first drive to begin the game for the Bison stalled out on the Guilford 23 yard line after GU went for it on 4th and 2 at the 19. The Quaker defense stuffed the Bison ball carrier for a loss of four yards to turn the ball over on downs.
Guilford got on the scoreboard with seven seconds left in the first quarter when Robles ran in from three yards out. A quick three-and-out from Gallaudet gave the Quakers the ball around midfield. On the next play, Robles ran 51 yards untouched down the near sideline into the end zone for the score.
The Bison had two turnovers in the first half that led directly to 14 points as Robles scored on a rushing touchdown each time. The Quakers led 34-0 at the half.
First-year quarterback
JeVaughn Sargent (Laurel, Md.) exited the game midway through the second quarter after a 16-yard run. Sophomore quarterback
Dylan Officer (Fairfax, Va.) entered and led the Bison offense the rest of the way.
Sargent completed three passes on seven attempts for 23 yards and ran for 23 yards on six carries. First-year wide receiver
Dwayne Collins II (Frederick, Md.) grabbed a team-high two passes for 28 yards.
Gallaudet's first four possessions in the second half were three-and-out drives that ended with a punt. The Quakers turned those punts into points as they scored three consecutive touchdowns on their final two possessions in the third quarter and the first possession in the fourth.
Junior linebacker
Dawson Ethington (Baltimore, Md.) led the Bison defense with a career-high 14 tackles (six solo) while the trio of seniors
Jacob Hundley (McKee, Ky.) and
Carter Johnson (McCall, Idaho) and first-year defensive back
Jaykuss Figueroa (Bronx, N.Y.) made nine tackles each. Ethington, Hundley and senior defensive back
Zefan Nathanson (Manor, Texas) tallied a team-high six solo tackles each.
Guilford sophomore linebacker Travis Burton had quite the game for himself with 12 tackles and 4.5 tackles for a loss of 17 yards, which included 3.5 sacks for 16 yards. Burton added one pass breakup, swatting down a pass at the line of scrimmage, and had one quarterback hurry. Junior linebacker Nick Iannone added 10 tackles (seven solo) which included 3.5 tackles for a loss of 14 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 13.
Senior
Andrae' Green (Washington, D.C.) was all over the field as he lined up as a wide receiver, defensive back, return specialist and punter. Green made six punts for 205 yards (34.2 average) with a long of 49 yards. Green returned five kickoffs for 93 yards with a long of 38. He also made one catch for a gain of seven yards.
Guilford finished with 558 yards of total offense, which included 300 yards rushing, while Gallaudet tallied 130 yards of offense, 71 yards on the ground. The Quakers controlled the time of possession battle, 35:12 to 24:48, and converted on 12 of 18 third-down plays and 2 of 4 fourth down. In contrast, GU went 1-for-9 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth. Guilford was 6-for-7 in the red zone while Gallaudet was 0-for-2. The Bison made it to the Guilford 9, late in the second quarter, and went for it on fourth down and threw an incomplete pass.
