WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 after the Bison swept two teams in Saturday's tri-match on Padden Court in the Field House.
Gallaudet (16-5, 5-0 United East) faced Penn State Harrisburg (11-5, 3-1 United East), which sits second in the United East standings, in the first match. The Bison dropped the second set to the Lions, ending their streak of six straight sweeps, before rallying to win the match in four sets, 3-1 (25-15, 15-25, 25-19, 25-15) . Gallaudet then started a new sweep streak with a straight-set victory over Albright College (4-13) in the final match with a score of 25-12, 15-12, 25-9. Penn St. Harrisburg swept Albright, 3-0, in the second match of three on Saturday.
In the first match, four Gallaudet players recorded double-doubles. Senior setter
Ella Gamble (Cullowhee, N.C.) registered 43 assists and 11 digs, while senior outside hitter
Brielle Worley (Amarillo, Texas) tallied 19 kills and 15 digs. Junior middle hitter
Jada Zarembka (Riverside, Calif.) added 12 kills and 14 digs, and senior outside hitter
Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) was the fourth Bison to record a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs.
In the second set, Penn St. Harrisburg had the advantage as GU posted a 0.023 hitting percentage and made seven errors in 43 attempts. In the next third and fourth sets, Gallaudet recorded 30 kills and four service aces to secure the victory and stay at the top of the United East standings.
Senior libero
Nicole Hicks (Corona, Calif.) made a match-high 28 digs which is her second highest total this season.
Brianna Ondishin Ribon led Penn St. Harrisburg with nine kills and 22 digs.
In the third and final match, Gallaudet served 11 aces and posted a .443 hitting percentage (47 kills with only eight errors on 88 attempts) to cruise to a clean and dominant victory over Albright.
Lummer and Zarembka had back-to-back double-doubles with 10 kills and 11 digs and 11 kills and 10 digs, respectively. Worley, the NCAA Division III leader in kills (359), added 14 kills to go with eight digs, four aces and two blocks. Gamble added 43 assists and three blocks. Hicks added match-high 16 digs.
Gamble, the NCAA Division III leader for service aces (80), served up six aces on Saturday.
Albright was led by Rachel Etim and Neve Straff with four kills, one ace and two blocks each while Straff recorded seven digs in the loss.
