WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University women's basketball coach
Stephanie Stevens couldn't have drawn up a better start for the Bison here Saturday afternoon as the home team jumped all over visiting Saint Elizabeth University (SEU).
The Bison secured a 76-67 win over the Eagles in a key United East Conference game in the Field House on Padden Court to begin the New Year.
Gallaudet (5-8, 2-2 United East) made seven shots in the first six minutes and led 15-0 over the Eagles. GU led 22-9 after the first quarter and outscored the visitors, 23-19, in the second to take a 45-28 lead into the half.
The Bison outscored the Eagles, 15-13, in the third quarter before Coach Stevens inserted some reserves into the game during the fourth. SEU held a 26-16 edge over the Bison in the fourth.
Gallaudet evens its conference record to 2-2 while Saint Elizabeth (7-6, 3-1 United East) suffers its first conference setback.
Sophomore guard
Cam Lexow (Abington, Pa.) recorded a career-high seven blocked shots to go with a team-high 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. First-year
Mackenzie Schirg (Factoryville, Pa.) had a career game with 15 points, four boards, two assists in 27 minutes played.
First-year forward
Sophia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) came off the bench to tally a career best 12 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Senior guard
Raj Guettler (Frederick, Md.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points, five assists, two steals and one block. Junior center
Hannah Puent (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the other Bison in double digits for rebounds with 11 as she added eight points and a career-high seven assists.
Saint Elizabeth was paced by Ahjionae Cobb's 23 points off the bench as she made a game-high five 3-pointers on six attempts. Ashley Phillip chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, six assists in the loss.
